Wine and the Caucasus
Telavi, Georgia

Georgians love their wine. There’s evidence to suggest they were the earliest wine makers in the world. These days Georgia produces about 50 million bottles of wine a year although until a ban in 2006 some 40 million was immediately exported to neighboring Russia. Now they’re desperately trying to open up new markets in Europe and the US.

Kakheti is one of the major wine growing regions and like most wine regions is a very pretty place. They’re not geared up for wine tourism but I’m sure it’s only a matter of time.
