The 13th century Geghard Monastery complex was placed on the UNESCO World Heritage List for its “remarkable rock-cut churches and tombs.” They add:”[It] is an exceptionally well preserved and complete example of medieval Armenian monastic architecture and decorative art, with many innovatory features which had a profound influence on subsequent developments in the region.”
I’ll remember it for the impromptu choir recital I was treated to while searching for the sacred spring. I heard them before I found them. They were in a circle in a pool of light flooding in from the carved cupola direcly above them. I have no idea what was happening but I didn’t care. I just stood there and enjoyed their perfect harmony reverberate around the medieval rock-cut walls of the chapel.
