Kakheti is the wine-growing region of Georgia and it’s an idyllic place in Springtime. Basing myself in the township of Telavi I took a day trip through the countryside stopping at the many historic churches along the way.
The townspeople seemed very fond of Alaverdi cathedral. Everyone I spoke with recommended it as a must-see so I had a look. I found a peaceful place seemingly in harmony with the landscape around it. It was built in the 11th Century and until recently it was the highest church in Georgia. The austere steeple can be seen for miles juxtaposed against the snow capped Caucasus mountains in the distance.
