Mustafa Kemal Atatürk is an omnipresent figure across modern Turkey. I’ve never heard of a man so single-handedly responsible for the shaping of a modern nation. He has his detractors of course (particularly the farther East you go) but elsewhere he appears to be venerated as a grand statesman and founder of the nation. This is never more true than at Anitkabir in Ankara where his body is entombed in a grand mausoleum surrounded by a serene city park.
