İshak Paşa Palace
Doğubeyazıt, Turkey

Far to the east of Turkey, the town of Doğubeyazıt lies only 35 km from the border crossing with Iran and therefore draws a steady if small stream of travelers making similar overland journeys as I was attempting. My failure to secure a visa for entry to Iran meant my route would take me the long way around via the Caucasus. However i’d come to Doğubeyazıt for another reason. I wanted to visit the quirky but picturesque Ishak Pasha Palace that sits on a hill above the town and I wanted to see Mount Ararat. The stormy winter weather made for some dramatic (and chilly) views from the palace and it completely blocked any hope of seeing the famous mountain. Then as I was on the bus heading out of town, the clouds parted and I got a fleeting glimpse of the snow-capped peak in the distance. I have no photo but I suspect the memory will be slow to fade.
