Delphi, home of the famous oracle, was the literal center of the world to the ancient Greeks. Zeus released two eagles from opposite ends of the worlds who met at Delphi and crashed to the earth at a spot later marked by a “navel stone”. Later when Apollo killed the serpent guarding the sacred spring, the gods blessed the spot with an oracle who would provide advice to any who asked. As the Oracle rose in popularity, Delphi rose in prominence — and wealth.
The ruins of the complex cascade down the hillside with commanding views of the lush valley below. An excellent museum provides a fascinating overview to the site as well as exhibiting some extraordinary pieces of art. It takes a good few days to do Delphi justice and I enjoyed every minute of them.
