It’s admittedly not the most visually interesting of antiquities but there’s enough drama in it’s history to more than make up for it. The Battle of Marathon has to be the archetype of underdog victories. In 490 BC, 10,000 men defended this spot against a Persian invading force twice their size and won a victory with less than 200 casualties against over 6000 of their enemy. The news was sent back to Athens by a runner who arrived in record time, delivered his message and dropped dead. The burial mound in the sleepy modern day town of Marathon is a simple but stirring legacy to the men that died.
