The massive rock overlooking the Gulf of Corinth has been used as a defensive position as far back as recorded history. It’s strategic location made it the perfect spot to repel invaders intent on reaching the Peloponnesian peninsula. As such it’s had a long list of former occupants who each added their own embellishments to the extensive fortifications. It takes a good bit of walking to circumnavigate the site and take in the impressive views from each direction.
The ancient city of Corinth was extraordinarily wealthy and played a prominent role in history as well as mythology. Here is the home of the Corinthian column and of King Sisyphus who was said to be the founder of Corinth. It’s also the place where Jason fatefully abandoned his wife Medea and where the Temple of Aphrodite was reputed to house 1000 ladies of disrepute. The Corinthians gave name to two books of the New Testament and perhaps played host to the apostle Paul while he wrote them.
