Truthfully I didn’t realize that Mount Olympus was real. It can be a bit tricky separating fact from fiction when it comes to Greek mythology. I’m glad to have discovered that the legendary “Abode of the Gods” not only quite tangibly exists but was on my way south from Thessaloniki to Athens. In the nearby town of Litochoro I found an irresistible deal on a guest house with a balcony affording views of the peak. I was a bit disappointed to hear that roughly 10,000 people a year climb to the summit. Not because I fancied the hike myself but because it just doesn’t seem right that mere mortals in Gore-Tex should be allowed to stomp around the home of the mighty Zeus and his clan.
