The cliff-top monasteries of Meteora are stunning sights from the ground by the interiors don’t disappoint either. An unexpectedly welcoming and convivial monk showed me into this tiny but richly painted chapel. He encouraged me to take photos with a gesture at my camera and a bearded smile. Before I was done I was ushered into another room where he drew back a wooden altar to reveal a hidden (perhaps forbidden?) fresco. At the next monastery I was served coffee and Turkish delight and encouraged to linger in the breezy vestibule before continuing my explorations.
