My quest for a tourist visa to Iran faced yet another frustrating 2 to 3 week wait. With the mercury dropping in eastern Turkey and Christmas season approaching, I made the tough decision to jet off to Connecticut to enjoy a holiday break with my family. The journey involved backtracking to Istanbul where I spent a couple of nights before flying to the US. Istanbul had been a disappointment the first time through but this time I was starting to see her charm. Perhaps it was the holiday season or that the chill had driven away the tourist crowds but I found myself gazing with renewed wonder at the Hagia Sophia and spent the evening admiring her from different angles.
