In the hills above Selçuk lies the pretty little village of Şirince known for it’s local wine production. It was settled by freed Greek slaves who are the source of the confusion over it’s name. Some say the problem arose when the local population tried pronouncing the Greek word and realized it meant “ugly” in the local language. Some say the Greeks deliberately called it “ugly” to keep others away. Either way, in the tumultuous exchange of populations that followed WWI, Turks from Greece were moved here and changed the name to the present one which means ‘sweet and charming’.
