Antioch – the Rome of the East!
Shockingly barely a structure survives of the once-great city under what is now modern-day Antakya. Apparently an archeological team had a good dig around in the 1930′s but failed to find the great palaces and churches they were hoping for. They did unearth some fine Roman mosaics which are now in the well-respected Antakya Mosaic Museum. This was the primary reason for stopping over here on my way onwards to Syria. However after a very long bus journey and an arrival in the wee hours of the morning I discovered the Museum was closed that day. So after a brief and unsuccessful excursion to find breakfast I decided to move on immediately. The only photo I took of my visit to this once-legendary city was of the nice chap who repaired my friend’s shoe for free.
