After stumbling on a wine festival in Budapest, I was to be twice-blessed by discovering I’d arrived in the wine-growing region of Eger on the day of another local festivity. I haven’t discovered any explanation or a name but clearly the costumes and cheer were in celebration of the local harvest which was being generously distributed (and joyfully received) throughout the wonderfully-named “Valley of the Beautiful Woman”. It’s here that any of the 100 small wine cellars will fill up the container of your choice with their own version of the region’s famous “Bull’s Blood” red wine or any of dozens of other varieties.
