Heavenly Hallstatt
Hallstatt, Austria

I thought Salzburg was a stunner but Austria just kept getting prettier the more I travelled through her.  The enchanting lakeside village of Hallstatt belongs in the pages of a storybook.  Impossibly picturesque houses cling to the hillside and shower the lanes with petals from overstuffed flower boxes.  At dusk, amber light spills out the windows of cosy Zimmer’s (B&B’s) and the smell of fresh-baked apple strudel snakes it’s way down the backstreets and into the sedately bustling town square.  The tourist office recommends hikes in the surrounding mountains, a visit to the salt mines or a paddle on the lake.  A determined day-long wander in search of affordable coffee and Sachertorte is my strongly-suggested alternative.
