Salzburg Cathedral Dome
Salzburg, Austria

Once past the medieval font where Mozart was baptized the visitor to this 17th century cathedral is greeted with an interior of surprisingly restrained whitewash.  Looking up however, the ceiling explodes in colourful Baroque murals and flourishes bathed in natural light from the dome windows.  The church itself was rebuilt from the ground up twice, most recently in the 1620′s, but the dome was to suffer a further demolition caused by WWII bombing.  Apparently the repairs moved slowly but were finally completed in 1959 when the dome was restored in all it’s glory and the Cathedral consecrated for a third time.
